As the director of this ten-minute play filmed during the pandemic of 2020/2021, I worked with the actors to develop their characters: 911 emergency telephone operators. This play depicts two emergency telephone operators fielding and logging calls on the morning of 9/11. The characters grapple with remaining calm amid chaos while processing their own emotions from the unfolding events. I challenged the actors to show these emotions through facial expressions, tone, and reaction to each other even though they (and I) were never in the same room together. I led auditions, casting, and numerous rehearsals which included a combination of activities, emotional exercises, script analyses, and run-throughs. I also created shot lists and storyboards because this production was filmed and edited before it was streamed. Lastly, I created budget lists for costumes and props and sent countless emails coordinating with the streaming platform and everyone involved in the show.
